The first step to finding the ideal facial care is to determine your skin type. This is the only way to create a care base that optimally supports your skin and gives it exactly what it needs. That's exactly what this article is about:

What skin types are there?

Balanced skin
You may know this skin type as "normal skin". We decided to change the name because we believe that every skin has its own "normality" and there are no "abnormal" skin types. Balanced skin describes the condition in which the skin's sebum production is in balance, a healthy glow is visible and the pores do not appear enlarged. Overall, the skin looks fresh, smooth and even.

Oily skin
Oily skin is caused by an overproduction of sebum. This excess sebum gives the skin a shiny complexion, while the skin may be slightly red in some areas. The pores are often enlarged and blackheads and blemishes may occur more frequently because the sebum does not drain away quickly enough and clogs the pores.

combination skin
Combination skin is a skin type that often causes confusion because it has characteristics of both dry and oily skin. In the T-zone - that is, on the forehead, nose and chin - the skin is usually shiny, the pores are enlarged and, similar to oily skin, blemishes occur. At the same time, the cheeks and the eye region are rather dry, the pores are finer here and flaking can occur in particularly dry areas.

Dry skin
Dry skin results from insufficient sebum production. If the natural sebum that normally keeps the skin supple is missing, the skin's protective barrier becomes too thin. This causes the skin to dry out more quickly, flake or even crack. Dry skin often looks thin, the pores are barely visible and the complexion looks dull and pale.

How do I know my skin type?

Now that you have an overview of the different skin types, you may already be able to guess which skin type applies to you. To be sure, you can carry out the following self-test:

In 3 steps to your skin type

The best way to prepare your skin is to cleanse it with water in the morning and not apply any skincare products. Then wait about 30 minutes before taking a close look at your skin.

Step 1: How is your sebum production?
Observe how sebum production behaves on your skin by paying close attention to where and how much your skin shines in the light. It helps to move your head slightly from side to side and up and down to better see the reflections.

If your skin doesn't shine at all, this indicates dry skin, as normally at least a slight shine should be visible. On the other hand, if only the T-zone (forehead, nose and chin) shines while the cheeks remain matte, you probably have combination skin. In the example picture above, you can clearly see this typical shine for combination skin.

If your skin shines strongly all over your face, this indicates oily skin, as this indicates excessive sebum production. However, if the shine is evenly and subtly distributed across the entire face, this could be a sign of balanced skin that is well moisturized and has a rosy complexion.

Step 2: What do your pores look like?
If your pores are barely visible or not visible at all on your entire face, this indicates dry skin. With this skin type, the pores are often too small because the skin lacks sebum. On the other hand, if your pores are enlarged in the T-zone and you see blackheads there, while the rest of your face remains fine-pored, you probably have combination skin. Enlarged pores all over your face and blackheads indicate oily skin. On the other hand, if your pores are evenly fine and barely visible, this is a sign of balanced skin.

Step 3: How does your skin feel?
Gently press the skin in different areas of your face and see how it reacts. If wrinkles form, this indicates dryness. If you notice fine lines on your cheeks but the T-zone looks plump, this indicates combination skin. If your skin is very plump overall, it could be oily. Wrinkles around the eyes while the rest of your face remains plump indicate balanced skin.

Step 4: How elastic is your skin?
A lack of elasticity and the formation of wrinkles all over the face indicate dry skin. With combination skin, the cheek area is rather dry, while the T-zone appears more elastic. Very plump skin all over the face indicates oily skin. If your skin is elastic overall, but you still notice slight wrinkles around the eyes, you have balanced skin.

With these 4 simple steps you can easily find out your skin type. Are you still not quite sure and want to make sure that you are right? Then we have our skin diagnosis here, which can help you determine your exact skin type and show you the right care for you. (Skin type advisor)
